3. Very short fiction: for CONSIDERATION

She went for a swim every morning, but this morning she wasn’t on the beach.
Instead there was silence, cruel, cold silence. Not even the wind would blow.
Everyone knew in their minds and in their hearts that this was the end.
The end of their peaceful existence. There was no mistaking it, the black shadow descended as they had all known it would and chaos erupted. The black shadow cast by the soldiers, as they ran into the village.
Woman and children hid in the secret Holes below. Men had collected their weapons, but it was no use, we were out of practice. Years of peace had taken its toll.
Not today she didn’t go to the beach, today my mother coward in a hole, waiting her fate and praying for a miracle. Tears rolled down my cheeks as my brother pulled me through the suddenly foreboding bush. The tears that came from the knowing I was leaving her behind.
